Quitting has a bad reputation, yet knowing when to quit is essential. I had to learn when to walk away—from relationships, projects, and social engagements. I never wanted to be perceived as ‘flaky’ or ‘unreliable,’ and I think many people feel the same. The fact that quitting carries such negative connotations is one reason we don’t do it enough.
Yes, quitting can be irresponsible—but sometimes, it’s the most responsible thing you can do for yourself.
Quitting isn’t about taking the easy way out. It’s about adjusting and pivoting so you can remain authentic as you grow. It’s about ensuring that you can keep meeting your needs. I quit my marriage in my 20s because being in it—along with other factors—led to self-loss. While I don’t believe divorce is a universal solution to life’s problems (obviously), it was part of the answer for me.
You’re allowed to quit—but pay attention to why you’re walking away. Don’t quit just because something is difficult. Quit because it’s detrimental or because it no longer aligns with you, represents you, or holds value for you. We only have one life (that I know of), which makes time your most valuable resource. Staying in something just to avoid quitting seems like a waste of it.
And to add nuance, I’ll say this: You’re allowed to quit, but you also have to take responsibility for the consequences. Even if walking away is the right decision, that doesn’t mean you’re exempt from making amends, helping with the transition, or acknowledging the impact of your choice—whatever your situation may require.
Yes, you are free to quit or stay, but you are also responsible for either decision.
Reflection Questions:
-What do you want to quit right now? (Be honest)
-What is preventing you from quitting?
-Will staying or leaving be more aligned with your authentic self?
-If you decide to quit, how can you take responsibility?
