We all have priorities, things we treat (or, at the very least, conceptualize) as more important than others. But for many of us, “having” priorities doesn’t directly translate into prioritizing things that matter to us. How many of us say that we care about our mental health or value our time but prioritize scrolling for an hour instead of journaling, getting fresh air, or meeting up with a friend?
I get it, it’s not always easy to prioritize the things we value. For example, maybe you value your romantic relationship or friendship but will stay extra late at the office and cancel dinner plans so that you can meet a deadline, network, or help your boss. Even if you listed your relationship as your top priority, it’s now being challenged by another value: financial security.
So, living our priorities is not always cut and dry. It doesn’t mean that you only ever prioritize one thing in any context. It implies that if you look at the pattern that is your life, you will invest more time (overall) in things that truly mean a lot to you–things that will help you live the life you want.
Activity:
Take a moment to write 5-10 things you want to prioritize in 2024. Now, open up your calendar or daily planner for the next week and rearrange your daily activities so that your week more accuretly reflects your priorities.
You can do this as a strictly theoretical exercise, highlighting how close or far you are from living the life you want and what changes you may want to make—flagging any values you are not prioritizing. Or, you can change your schedule and see how this week feels once you do (if possible).
No one tells us that living our values comes with sacrifice. We always assume that everything good for us will feel good, and that’s not always the case. Sometimes, we will have to weigh one value against another. Occasionally, we will fall behind in one area to get ahead in another.
Let meaning be your compass.
Constantly reevaluate your priorities
Change them when necessary.
But most importantly, live them.

5 star review: “This is such an incredible book, especially now where we can be so distracted and disconnected and comparing ourselves on social media. Possibly not even realizing how disconnected we are from ourselves. Since I’ve started reading this book I have actually felt myself viewing myself and life in a different way. I can’t recommend enough. I’m a therapist and have already recommended it to a few clients.” Victor
I’ve started a journalling guide/challenge!! To my paid subscribers, I will be sending bi-monthly (twice a month) reflection questions to help them turn inward and connect with them Selves. I will be in the comment section sharing journaling tips and answering questions! Maybe even sending some voice memos. I am hoping to do this for six months but if we love it, I might extend! If you want to get into journaling, come try!
I developed a course for Simon Sinek’s platform called: How to build strong relationships at work. It’s now available!!
Have you gotten my daily calendar for 2024? It’s such a fun way to get insight and encouragement, while decorate your desk.
Thank you for sharing. Great piece. Let me now close the app and go do something that needs to be a priority for today.
